          Archibald Henry Grimké was an African-American lawyer, intellectual, journalist, diplomat and community leader in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

          One ledger, Athenæum Share Holders and Ticket Holders, lists readers for the period 1869 to 1894 and recently I came across Archibald Henry Grimké’s name listed as a reader.

          This was a fascinating discovery. His name may not be familiar today, but in the late 19th and early 20th centuries he was one of the most prominent people leading the struggle for African American rights.  Grimké was a lawyer, author, diplomat, and was an avid protest leader.
